This early film of Jackie Chan’s was meant to shepherd him into the ’70s kung fu genre pantheon made internationally popular by Bruce Lee. Indirectly it did, but probably more out of positioning than performance. Chan was to assume Lee’s position as kung fu superstar, made evident by his role in New Fist of Fury (1976), the somewhat clunky chop-socky sequl to The Chinese Connection (on which Chan had worked as a stunt man). Directed by Wei Lo, New Fist of Fury picks up with two siblings fleeing a Japanese-occupied Shanghai for Taiwan, where their grandfather runs a Kung Fu school. However, a Japanese martial arts teacher has plans to run all the schools under his own name, eventually killing the grandfather. Chan plays a young thief who, at first, wants nothing to do with fighting but then finds his calling as the new leader of rebels against the Japanese occupation. Chan of course is no Bruce Lee (although during one dramatic sequnce, a still of Lee is cut into the frame to “remind” viewers of the filmmakers’ intentions) but New Fist of Fury marks Chan’s first entry as a leading actor in Hong Kong action films. –Shannon Gee

A funny thing happened to Finian’s Rainbow in between its debut as a Broadway musical in 1947 and its appearance as a film in 1968. After 21 years, its theme of racial tension in the American South was no longer cutting edge, and the fact that its heroes are a group of sharecroppers called the Rainbow Valley Tobacco Cooperative dates it even further. Add a number of subplots and the heavy hand of a 29-year-old Francis Ford Coppola directing his first and only musical, and the two-and-a-half-hour running time feels bloated. Hermes Pan (best known for the classic Astaire-Rogers movies) is credited with choreographing the overbusy musical numbers, but he was reportedly overruled by Coppola at every turn. Still, there is a lot to enjoy in this movie, most notably Fred Astaire in his last lead role in a musical. Fred plays Finian McLonergan, an Irishman who has traveled to America in hopes of planting a pilfered pot of gold near Fort Knox and watching it grow. Even at 69, Fred shows he is still capable of a sprightly step and warbling “Look to the Rainbow.” Another plus is the casting of ’60s pop icon Petula Clark as his daughter, as she sings with an unaffected loveliness. Finally, the score by Burton Lane and E.Y. Harburg includes two of the best Broadway songs ever written–”Old Devil Moon” and “How Are Things in Glocca Morra?”–as well as the comic ditty “When I’m Not Near the Girl I Love.” –David Horiuchi

Made during the heyday of Hollywood anthology films (such as O. Henry’s Full House and Tales of Manhattan), this meandering movie is wound around the adventures of a lowly classified-ad clerk (Burgess Meredith, who also produced) who plays roving “man on the street reporter” for a day. He asks the qustion, “What influnce has a baby had on your life?” and gets a collection of comical responses. Hapless jazz musicians Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart mistake the word “baby” for “babe” and describe how a shapely trumpet-playing dish upended their lives, movie star Dorothy Lamour remembers how a child star turned an Iowa day player into a South Seas screen goddess, and Fred MacMurray tells a story suspiciously similar to “The Ransom of Red Chief.” It’s fun to see Fonda stumble and stammer through a slapstick performance and Lamour spoof her Polynesian Princess image, but it’s a lightweight lark with only fitfully funny stories.
Officially credited to King Vidor and Leslie Fenton, it also received uncredited assistance from John Huston and George Stevens in the Fonda-Stewart story. None of them show much facility for slapstick and their styles never meld. The film lurches from one gag to another, only settling down for MacMurray’s story, where his easy delivery and chemistry with future “My Three Sons” costar William Demarest overcomes the clumsy direction. Paulette Goddard also rises above her material in a small role as Meredith’s sharp and sexy wife. –Sean Axmaker

Chazz Palminteri wrote the script for this excellent story of an Italian American boy (Lillo Brancato) who grows up in the 1960s caught between the strong influnces of his blu-collar, straight- arrow father (Robert De Niro) and a Mafia chieftain (Palminteri) who is his all-purpose mentor. De Niro makes his directorial debut with this production and, except for a little stiffness, does very well by the characters and their world. The story does not go precisely where one might expect it to go: Palminteri knows better than to force the central figure to choose between the two most important men in his life, and he doesn’t fill time with stock drama about crime or family conflict. Joe Pesci makes an extremely effective and uncredited appearance at the end as a man who doesn’t have to do more than speak softly to communicate how dangerous he is. –Tom Keogh
