From the beginning, Storm Scooters and Razor Sharp Tricks seems a little out of touch. The half-hour video starts out with a man building a wooden scooter, “The Shavor,” for his son. Excuse me, a wooden scooter? It features 15 riders doing cool spins, flips, jumps, and grinds. Although the tricks are neat, it becomes a little tedious to watch the same maneuvers over and over again. Sometimes the footage has an artsy bent, incorporating brown-and-white video and hip-sounding music. It would be a great video for nonverbal kids because probably fewer than 10 words are spoken throughout. Injuries to kids and their wheels are also on display–people fall, wreck their scooters, and do dangerous stunts, such as scooting over someone lying down. If I were going to buy a single scooter video, it wouldn’t be this one. Try Scooter Mania for the easier-to-understand beginner tips. –Gillian Clow

This sequl to the sex thriller Trois improves on the original. Mia (Monica Calhoun) is a police psychologist who leaves the force to start a private practice, but one of her cases follows her. Mia, whose husband neglects her, finds herself drawn into stories of sexual escapades by Tammy (Chrystale Wilson), whose husband was brutally murdered only months before. To gain a better understanding of her patient, Mia goes to a mysterious sex club called Pandora’s Box, not realizing she’s being drawn into a trap. The sex club scenes in Trois 2: Pandora’s Box are no sillier (and considerably more direct) than those in highbrow erotic thrillers like Eyes Wide Shut. Calhoun (The Best Man) makes an appealing heroine and carries the movie along in between the steamy scenes. Also featuring Michael Jai White and Tyson Beckford. –Bret Fetzer

Knights of the Zodiac is DIC’s reworking of the anime series Saint Seiya (1986) for American television. Much of the violence has been excised: Seiya rips off an opponent’s ear in Saint, and the audience sees it pulsating on the arena floor; Knights deletes the entire sequnce. During battles, DIC colors the blood blu or purple in an unsuccessful attempt to disguise it. The actors on the Knights dub sound stiff and not very bright. The mystical underpinnings of the martial arts combat have also been simplified. In the original, Seiya’s mentor Marin explains how all matter and energy originated in the Big Bang; in Knights, she mentions, “that same power that caused the universe to begin with a bang.” Knights of the Zodiac may please Cartoon Network viewers, but it will infuriate anime purists.
